How Much Does Internet Marketing School Cost?

Internet Marketing School Prices

Internet marketingalso known as web marketing, e-marketing, or Search Engine Marketing (SEM)is growing at a time when the U.S. economy as a whole is struggling. Those interested in learning the skills necessary to land an internet marketing job can seek admission to a certificate, bachelor's degree, or master's degree program.

Web Marketing Considerations

Key aspects of internet marketing include website building, web advertising, achieving top rankings on search engines through Search Engine Optimization (SEO), creating multimedia and driving business through social media.

While formal training in these areas is important, so too is hands on experience. You may, then, want to create a portfolio of work (such as websites you've built or helped to build), attend internet marketing job conferences and webinars, and follow prominent blog. It may also be helpful to choose a single discipline (SEO, analytics, copywriting, etc.) within the broad field of web marketing as you train and build your resume.

Here's what else prospective internet marketers should know about job and education opportunities:

Salary and Job Prospects

Because many online marketing positions are relatively new, there isn't a large and reliable body of data on all positions in the field (the Bureau of Labor Statistics, for example, doesn't provide salary information on internet marketing jobs specifically). Some private companies, however, including recruitment firm Crandall Associates, do provide salary data. According to 2011 figures from Crandall Associates, average annual salaries for online marketing jobs include the following:

  • VP, e-commerce: $155,900
  • Manager, Web marketing: $80,300
  • SEO Specialist: $75,000
  • Interactive Copywriter: $72,000
  • Digital Media Planner: $64,500

Please note that this is just one data set from one company. Actual online marketing salariesparticularly starting salariesmay differ significant. That being said, the employment outlook for e-marketing jobs is excellent overall. In fact, Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI) predicts that e-marketing jobs will grow by 22% from 2010 to 2020.

Education

A number of options exist for obtaining formal online marketing training. Professionals who want to learn internet marketing basics such as analytics, social media, and SEO might complete a certificate program. These programs can usually be completed in six months to a year.

More advanced training is available through associate's, bachelor's, and master's degree programs. A large number of schools that offer e-marketing degrees are (appropriately enough) online learning institutions. In order to earn an internet marketing degree in a traditional on-campus setting, you may have to pursue a degree in business, finance, or marketing with a specialization in internet marketing. Check with individual schools to find out whether they offer e-marketing degrees, programs, or courses.

Marketing School Average Costs

  • A certificate in online marketing might cost $4,000 to $6,000 or more.
  • The average cost per year (tuition and fees, excluding books and room and board) of colleges and universities ranges from $3,131 (public two-year college) to $29,056 (private four-year institution) (source: The College Board, Trends in College Pricing 2012 Report).
  • For the most accurate pricing information, contact the actual schools that you're interested in. Schools can also provide information on financial assistance in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, and employment (i.e. work-study programs). Scholarships and grants are also offered by private and nonprofit organizations. Learn more at studentaid.ed.gov.
